*Hone your writing skills. Just because you can submit an article to Helium or write a blog post doesn't mean that you are a good writer. To actually make a living freelancing online you need to write well. Poor writing will detract from your work and hurt your ability to make money freelancing. Mastering the basic skills of grammar and style won't guarantee your success, but not mastering them is almost guaranteed to prevent it.
* Establish your brand as an Internet writer. While the Internet has opened up many more markets for freelance writing, it has also created more competition. If you want to land freelance writing jobs online, you have to stand out. Maybe you are an expert on an especially narrow topic. Maybe you have a unique writing style or voice. Maybe you can add value to your writing through graphic design or photography. To make it freelancing online you have to be able to be different.
* Work hard. There was a time that a handful of successful freelance writers dominated the market. These folks had a great deal of liberty and flexibility, as rates of pay were much higher than they are online. Freelancing online means that you hve to really work at freelancing. You need to put your time in. You need to write, every day. In some cases, being able to produce a high volume of quality content in a short period of time might even be necessary.
* Be ready for rejection. Arguably, there is less rejection in freelancing online than there was in traditional print freelancing. Still, you aren't going to land every client, and sometimes your work will be rejected. By preparing yourself for this, you will be more able to rebound after it happens.
In many ways, your success at freelancing online will depend on how closely you follow these ideas.
